There are around 600 known neurological conditions that affect the brain. Some, like dementia, epilepsy and stroke, are more widely recognised. Others are rare and affect just a few people. But all of them can have a devastating impact, leaving people feeling isolated and frightened.

The Brain Charity provides practical, emotional and social support to people with neurological conditions and their families—helping them lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Support built on 30 years of experience

Since 1993, The Brain Charity has helped people manage the life-changing effects of brain conditions. Neurological disorders affect every part of life; movement, memory, personality, relationships, decision-making. The brain controls it all.

People living with neurological conditions are twice as likely to experience mental health challenges compared to the general population. But waiting times for NHS counselling can stretch beyond a year.

Pippa Sargent, CEO of The Brain Charity, said:

“When someone is diagnosed with a neurological condition, it doesn’t just affect their body — it can shake their sense of self. Many people feel isolated, frightened and overwhelmed. Our counselling service helps people rebuild not just their mental health, but their confidence, identity and hope. Mental and neurological health are deeply connected. People with neurological conditions are twice as likely to face mental health challenges, yet too often are left waiting months, even years, for the right support. Our service offers faster access and is built on a deep understanding of our clients’ experiences.”

The Health Lottery Foundation was impressed by how accessible the service is, offering flexible delivery so people across the UK can take part remotely.

The service includes different therapeutic approaches—CBT, person-centred and integrated. It’s available for individuals, couples, families and groups, either in person or via phone and video call.

Pippa added:

“What makes our counselling service truly unique is its specialist focus. It’s shaped around the lived experience of people affected by neurological conditions. Our therapists understand not just the psychological side, but also the physical, cognitive and emotional impact. That empathy through true understanding makes a world of difference. This support doesn’t just help individuals — it strengthens families, relationships and whole lives, whether delivered in person, online or by phone.”

Clients consistently report lower levels of depression and anxiety, and better relationships after receiving support.

Helen, who had a stroke in November 2024, said:

“I thought I was going mad following my stroke; my emotions were out of control. I booked three sessions with a Brain Charity counsellor, who is like a ray of sunshine in a cloudy world. If only I had a million pounds, I’d give it to The Brain Charity right away!”

The Brain Charity now supports more than 3,000 people each year.
