We went to see the incredible work of the national charity Beauty Banks on a recent visit in Scotland after the organisation was awarded £75,000 by The Health Lottery Foundation.
Thanks to players of The Health Lottery, this investment will strengthen the charity’s work tackling hygiene poverty, including its busy Dundee facility where donations are sorted, packed and sent to organisations supporting people across Scotland. The charity also has warehouses in Greater Manchester, Brighton and Croydon.
During a recent visit, a representative from The Health Lottery met Jennifer Comiskey, who leads the Dundee hub with a team of dedicated volunteers. Their work is simple and impactful: selecting the right mix of essential hygiene products for each box so support reaches people who need it most.
Comiskey said the Dundee operation is “small and mighty,” with a local feel but national impact. “It’s hands-on,” she said. “You see volunteers turn products into real support for real people. The energy in the room is lovely because everyone knows the boxes are heading straight to Scottish communities that need them. Watching volunteers take pride in ‘their’ boxes going out across the country is uplifting.”
She added that the most rewarding part of her role is hearing from charity partners.
“When a delivery helps someone feel like themselves again or takes one worry off their plate, it makes all the planning and packing worth it.”
Comiskey also underlined the importance of the service, adding:
“Hygiene items aren’t optional extras. People shouldn’t have to choose between food, heat and hygiene. Our boxes help close that gap.”
Jo Jones, Co-Founder, Beauty Banks said:
“Thanks to players of The Health Lottery, we’re able to reach hundreds more communities across the UK with essential hygiene products at an exceptionally busy and challenging time for charities like ours — helping to protect health, dignity and wellbeing for people who struggle to keep themselves and their families clean. We’re incredibly grateful for this support and for the recognition of the vital work our teams and volunteers across the UK do every day in their communities.”
Martin Ellice, Managing Director of The Health Lottery added:
“Meeting Jennifer demonstrated exactly why this £75,000 matters. You see care, kindness and thought going into every box. We’re proud that players of The Health Lottery have made this funding possible, and delighted to support the work of Beauty Banks.”
More than £136 million has been raised through The Health Lottery to support charities across Great Britain.
